Camera Aperture Explained 📸

Aperture is measured in f-stops, which tell you how wide the lens opening is. The key thing to remember is that lower f-stop numbers mean a larger opening, and higher f-stop numbers mean a smaller opening.

•f/1.4, f/1.8, f/2.0

These are wide apertures. They let in a lot of light, making them great for low-light shooting. They also create a shallow depth of field, meaning your subject is sharp but the background becomes very blurred.

•f/2.8, f/4

These are moderately wide. They still let in plenty of light and create some background blur, but not as extreme. They’re often used for portraits, sports, or wildlife.

•f/5.6, f/8

These mid-range f-stops balance light and sharpness. Many lenses are sharpest here. They provide a medium depth of field, keeping more of the scene in focus while still controlling brightness well.

•f/11, f/16, f/22

These are narrow apertures. They let in less light, so they’re used in bright conditions or when you want a large depth of field—meaning everything from foreground to background is sharp. Landscape photographers often use these f-stops.

How to Make Yourself Float Camera Effect!

To capture the smooth slow motion jumping shots I used the following settings on my Sony A7IV camera:

- 120 FPS on S&Q Mode
- 1/250 shutter speed
- 4.0 Aperture
- 3200 ISO

I’d recommend using this effect next to a large object to give your visual a depth of scale.
